Special issue information:
Interest in hybrid nanomaterials based on semiconductor compounds stems from unique properties emerging when heterostructures are prepared or semiconductors are combined with other materials such as metals, semi-metals or organic compounds. Engineering the composition, spatial micro-nano-architectures and interfaces of hybrid nanomaterials may lead to improved electrical, optical, magnetic, and mechanical properties that are impossible to achieve with pure counterparts and this could be exploited in various applications, including photonics, nonlinear optics, photovoltaics, photodetectors, sensors, catalysts, electrodes, batteries, etc. At the nanoscale, the quantum size effects occurring in semiconductors can be exploited for the purpose of enhancing performances of electronic and optoelectronic devices. Along with 1D and 2D structures involving nanowires and nanomembranes, the 3D hybrid nanoarchitectures have shown enormous interest to enhance energy storage and conversion efficiency. Functionalization of surfaces with metal dots, carbon and/or organic molecules can be applied to tailor the material characteristics for specific applications. Special attention is envisaged to be focused on the development of biocompatible and radiation hard materials for biomedical and space applications.
